The U.K. is currently celebrating Ageing Safely Week (September 29th to October 5th). In line with the celebration, firefighters have urged senior citizens to evaluate their homes’ fire safety arrangements. Officials are understandably concerned given the public’s surprising lack of awareness for such a serious matter.
What are the odds?
It has been estimated that in the next two decades or so, a quarter of the population in the U.K. will be at least 65 years of age, with 6 million people over the age of 80. Sadly, those aged 65 or over are twice as likely to perish in a fire.
Firefighters have announced that they will conduct a fire safety risk assessment free of charge for willing residents. This will also include fitting of fire alarms where needed as well as mapping the residence for safe routes leading outside the home in case of an emergency. The offer is good for residents and landlords of care facilities, who are urged to take this opportunity to ensure the safety of all occupants.
Experts available all year round
If you aren’t able to take advantage of the free assessment, fret not. There are fire safety specialists who can provide the safety assessment for a reasonable charge. The package includes emergency planning and training for building management as well as installation of extinguishers and even conducting of regular fire drills.
